Santa Marta is the starting point not only for the Lost City trek, but also for Tayrona National Natural Park (beaches and jungle on the Caribbean) and Minca (coffee, waterfalls and birdwatching in the mountains). Many travelers combine two or all three destinations in a single trip. Here are some itinerary ideas.
The three destinations complement each other: the Lost City is mountain jungle and physical adventure; Tayrona is Caribbean beach and relaxation; Minca is mountain coffee, waterfalls and quiet nature. None require extra flights — all depart from and return to Santa Marta, so you can chain them together without losing time on logistics.
The most popular combination: about 6-7 days total. You start with the Lost City trek (the most demanding part, so it's best done first with fresh energy) and finish relaxing on the beaches of Cabo San Juan or Playa Cristal inside Tayrona Park. Ideal if you want to balance intense adventure with rest by the sea.
For mountain and coffee lovers: after the trek, head up to Minca (just 45 minutes from Santa Marta) to tour coffee farms, cool off at Marinka or Pozo Azul waterfalls, and spot endemic birds. A much calmer way to close the trip than the beach, ideal if you prefer nature over parties.
If you have more time, you can experience all three: the Lost City trek, Tayrona's beaches and Minca's coffee mountains. It's the most complete way to experience the diversity of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in a single trip, from the jungle to the sea.
